Celebrating 20 Years of Tennis & Food with Citi Taste of Tennis

This week in New York City, Citi Taste of Tennis is celebrating their 20 year anniversary. The premiere food festival has paired top chefs and tennis stars in their fun and flavorful events throughout Indian Wells, Miami, Washington DC and the Big Apple. Over the years, Outside the Ball had a seat at the table and we’re sharing some of our favorite moments before this year’s star studded party.

From Rafael Nadal to Serena and Venus Williams, tennis players enjoy walking the red carpet before cooking up delicious bites with world renowned chefs. We asked some of the players if they were as comfortable in the kitchen as they are on the court. Jo Wilfried Tsonga said his cooking skills aren’t bad, while Simona Halep was flipping for one dish, and one dish only. “I cook only pancakes. I know how to do pancakes and nothing else.”

Citi Taste of Tennis New York is a multi-day event that is largely considered the tennis event of the year. The city was an electrifying backdrop for the Taste of Tennis Master Class, an invitation-only cooking demonstration featuring Garbine Muguruza. The Spanish star joined chef Arturo Vivanco at The Tuscany, a St Giles Signature Hotel, to make her favorite Monte Cristo sandwich. “It has french toast, and ham, and ham, ham, and ham.” Muguruza described with a laugh.

At Citi Taste of Tennis Miami players party poolside at this beach chic soiree. Victoria Azarenka even went into the DJ booth to help DJ Mad Linx set the tone. “It’s my first time here and I’m so impressed, and I’m actually so hungry!” said Belinda Bencic. We joined Genie Bouchard before the party to see how a player prepares for a night out. Afterwards we reunited with her on the carpet where we had fun with foodie themed pick-up lines. “If you were a fruit, you’d be a fineapple!”

Wherever you attend Citi Taste of Tennis, you can expect to dance the night away as your favorite tennis stars and incredible local chefs serve up delectable eats. At this year’s party on August 22nd, John Isner, Venus Williams and Top Chef alum Richard Blais are headlining the event at Cipriani. We can’t wait to dig in and enjoy another 20 years. Congrats, Taste of Tennis/AYS!
